Seidengingko

Im Stoffladen blieb ich bei wunderschön changierendem Seidenstoff hängen. Ich konnte nicht widerstehen. Und da ich kurz zuvor 'Das Tor' genäht hatte, wollte ich nochmal etwas mit Gingkoblättern machen. 

One day I went to the shop to buy some fabric. A beautifully shimmering silk caught my attention. I couldn't resist. And as I had just sewn 'The gateway' I once again wanted to create something that had to do with gingko leaves.

 

Die Gingkoblätter habe ich mit dem Hintergrund gepiecet. Der dunkle Stiel und die beiden Blätter am oberen Rand wurden mit der Hand appliziert. Die Fruchtstände und die hellen Knötchenreihen (Regen?) habe ich gestickt.

I pieced the leaves into the background. The dark stem and the leaves at the top of the quilt were appliequéd by hand. I embroidered the seed heads and the 'raindrops'.

 

Zum Schluss habe ich das Bild freihand mit der Maschine gequiltet.

Last but not least I freemotion quilted the picture by machine.

Chronos und Kairos

Meine beiden neuen Quilts haben die griechischen Götter Chronos und Kairos zum Thema. Ich habe gerostete Stoffe verwendet und mit der Nähmaschine freihand gezeichnet.
My new quilts are about the Greek gods Chronos and Kairos. I used rusted fabric and drew onto them with my sewing machine.

Chronos ist die griechische Personifikation der verrinnenden Zeit.
Chronos is the greek personification of trickling time.

Die Uhrenkette und den verrinenden Sand habe ich mit der Hand aufgestickt.
The watch chain and the trickling sand have been stitched by hand.

Kairos hingegen personifiziert den rechten Augenblick, den es zu ergreifen gilt. Er wird meist mit einer Haartolle dargestellt.
Kairos on the other hand personifies the proper moment that is to be seized. He is mostly  represented with his hair looking like a cockscomb.

Lebenszyklus

Für einen Wettbewerb der Zeitschrift 'Patchwork Professional' mit dem Thema '5' entwarf ich diesen Quilt.

For a challenge started by the newspaper 'Patchwork Professional' I designed the following quilt.

Im Universum entsteht Leben. Wir alle durchschreiten einen fünfteiligen Lebenszyklus - 

The universe has brought life into being. We all stride through a cycle of life -

von der Zeit im Mutterleib - geborgen - über die Kindheit 

from our time in mother' s womb - being secure - to childhood

durch unsere Lebensmitte 

followed by our middle years,

zum Alter - hoffentlich in Weisheit und Kontemplation - 

the old age - hopefully in wisdom and contemplation -

bis zum unausweichlichen Tod. (Aus dem Vergehen entsteht neues Leben.)

up to our enevitable death (which creates new life.)

Den Quilt habe ich gepiecet und die vielen kleinen Sterne gestickt - ebenso wie die Figuren, die ich dann mit Goldfarbe ausmalte.

This quilt is pieced and the tiny stars as well as the outlines of the figures are embroidered. The figures I then painted with golden colour.

Waldsee

Wer hat kein Ufo - ein unfinished object - in seinem Schrank liegen? Mein Ufo parkte dort jahrelang. Tatsächlich war es der erste Quilt, den ich in Angriff genommen hatte. Endlich habe ich ihn fertiggestellt und freihand gequiltet.

Is there any quilter who hasn't got an UFO - an unfinished object - in her cabinet? Mine has parked there for years. As a matter of fact I had started it as my first quilt. Finally I have finished and freemotion quilted it.

In einem dichten Wald liegt ein Tümpel. Sonnenlicht bricht  durch den grünen Blätterhimmel des Waldes seine Bahn und setzt die Binsen im See in Szene. (Die Farben werden etwas zu kalt wiedergegeben - ich muss mal ein neues Foto machen.)

A pond - hidden in a dark forest. Sunlight breaking its way through green foliage and thus giving light to rush. (I must take another photo as the colours turned out to be too blueish.)

Sylter Möwe

Bei meinem letzten Urlaub auf Sylt machte ich ein Foto einer Möwe. Die Wellen und der Strand hatten es mir mal wieder angetan. Also spielte ich ein wenig mit Stoffen, die ich auf Lager hatte. Die Möwe druckte ich auf ein Stück Stoff. Die Stücke wurden gepiecet, appliziert und freihand gequiltet. 

When I visited the island Sylt the last time I took a picture of a seagull. Back home I couldn't forget the waves and the beach. So I played a little bit with the fabric I had in store. The picture of the seagull was printed on some fabric. I pieced, appliquéd and freemotion quilted the piece.

Ich konnte mich nicht so gut entscheiden, wo die Möwe sitzen sollte. Da schenkte mir eine Freundin ein Stück Material, dass sie mit dem Heilluftföhn geformt und dann bemalt hatte. (Vielen Dank liebe Momo.) Als Holzpfosten ziert es nun den Quilt - 

I couldnt decide on the spot I wanted the seagull to sit. A friend of mine helped me by giving me some material she had formed with a hot-air gun and then painted. (Thank you so much dear Momo!) As a pole you can see it under the seagull -

dreidimensional - damit die Möwe nicht herunterfällt.

Das Tor

Vor einigen Jahren erstellte ich eine Collage aus Papier. Sie gefiel mir so gut, dass ich sie als Quilt nähen wollte.

Hier ist der Quilt. Das Stück ist gepiecet, appliziert und freihand maschinell gequiltet. Die Stoffe sind teilweise selber gefärbt und gekauft.

Some years ago I created a paper collage. I liked it so much that I decided to use the design for a quilt.

It is pieced, appliquéd and quilted freehand. Some of the fabric was bought and some eco-printed.

Steppe

Im Herbst brachte mir meine Kollegin einen ganzen Eimer voller Walnussschalen mit. Diese weichte ich ein und versenkte darin etwas Stoff. Es kam ein Graubraun zum Vorschein - ich hatte mir mehr erhofft, aber die Farbe passte sehr gut zu der Zwiebeschalenfärbung. Ich entschloss mich, die beiden Stoffe miteinander zu verarbeiten. Was fehlte, war ein wenig Kontrast. Ich hatte noch etwas entfärbten schwarzen Stoff. So entstand die Steppenlandschaft. 

Gelbe Gräser wiegen sich im Wind. Dahinter stehen einige knorrige Bäume und etwas Gestrüpp. Im Vordergrund liegen einge Erdklumpen. (Mal wieder weiß ich nicht, warum das zweite Bild hochkant erscheint. Kennt jemand die Lösung?)

Last autumn a collegue of mine gave me a bucket full of walnut skins (is that the correct term?). I soaked them in water and put some fabric in it. The result was a greyish brown - I had expeted a more stunning colour but it went quite well with my last onion colouring. What was missing was a little contrast. So combined the two materials with a black fabric I had discharged. There it was - the steppe landscape.

Yellow grassland waving in the wind, some gnarled trees in the background and lumps of dark earth in the foreground. (Does anyone know why the second picture is put on its side? I can't get it straight.)
